This dataset provides 1351 occurrence data of algae in the Microbial Culture Collection at the National Institute for Environmental Studies, Japan (NIES Collection) where culture strains of cyanobacteria, eukaryotic microalgae, protozoa and endangered algae are maintained. The NIES Collection can be found at https://mcc.nies.go.jp/localeAction.do?lang=en.

研究範圍 Algae found in Japan from 1964 to 2021.
品質控管 Scientific names were validated against AlgaeBase and the GBIF Backbone Taxonomy. Geographic coordinates provided by collectors and depositors or derived from documents of strain deposit requests in the NIES Collection were checked on Google Maps to see whether the coordinates were within the areas of localities.

方法步驟描述:

  1. Geographic coordinates and uncertainties were measured using gazetteers such as Google Maps and Google Earth 7.1.2.2041 following procedures described in Chapman and Wieczorek (2006). The center of a locality area calculated with ArcGIS 10 was selected as a representative point for localities where exact coordinates were not provided. Geographic data including polygons, lines and points according to the National Land Numerical Information download service (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Japan 2005a, 2005b, 2015), Arc GIS data collection 2012 and the literature (Tanaka 2004) were used for calculation. A centroid of a municipality instead of the exact location is used as a generalized locality for endangered algae species. For a municipality consisting of islands, the main island is used to represent the municipality.
  2. Algae strain data were extracted from the Microbial Culture Collection and organized into occurrence data using a MySQL database.
