説明
A series of monitoring of insects visiting crop flowers was conducted on several crop species around Japan. The project, which ran from 2017 to 2021, was led by NARO and funded by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) to determine the abundance and diversity of wild insects that could potentially contribute to crop production across Japan. Flower-visiting wild insects were captured using plastic vials during the blooming season at multiple sites for one to several years. Domesticated pollinators, Apis mellifera and Osmia cornifrons were also captured in 2017. This data includes more than 6,500 individuals of flying insects from 18 families of Hymenoptera, 33 families of Diptera, 17 families of Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Lepidoptera, Psocodea, and Neuroptera captured in 20 fields of apple (Malus pumila Mill.), Japanese pear (Pyrus pyrifolia (Burm.f.) Nakai), and Oriental persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thunb.) as of August 2023.

プロジェクトデータ
Declines in pollinating insects have been reported worldwide due to habitat modification and climate change. However, the information on the abundance and diversity of wild insects that contribute to crop production had been limited in Japan. In this project, insects that visited flowers of major Japanese crops were identified as potential pollinators, and methods for monitoring them were developed. The project was also aimed to develop a method to enhance pollination services through vegetation management. These will help establish a technological basis for utilizing the ecosystem services to contribute the sustainable agricultural production.

研究の意図、目的、背景など(デザイン) | The surveys were conducted on the days of full bloom without rain at each site for one to several years, covering morning to afternoon. Flower-visiting insects were captured using 50-mL plastic vials by gently placing them over the insects while researchers walked around the sites. Captured insects were preserved individually in 99.5% ethanol or 98% propylene glycol with the information of sites, dates, and time periods within the day. Before capturing, researchers confirmed the access by the insects to the reproductive organs of the flowers, or that they entered the flowers from the front, representing a high likelihood of successful pollination. |
